What’s new Metalheads! I bring you today an amazing new Rock/Metal band from Norway called Savn, which has released a fantastic self-titled debut album that you shouldn’t miss.

The roots of Savn lead us to a previous great Gothic/Doom Metal band called The Sins Of Thy Beloved, which after two succeded albums called “Lake Of Sorrow” and “Perpetual Desolation”, the band has been remained inactive since 2000.

After some rumors about their reunion, Sins Of Thy Beloved has never come back, but Stig Johansen y Anders Thue have returned in 2013 like a Phoenix risen from the ashes to offer us a great new musical brand called Savn.

This new musical project has found the piece that was lacking to give definite shape the universe of Savn, musically and spiritually speaking, I am referring to the amazing vocalist Carmen Elise Espenæs, singer from Norwegian Folk Metal band called Midnattsol.

Stig Johansen contacted his friend Carmen to invite her to sing on one song from the Savn’s debut album, and after the great final result, Camen became officially in the vocalist of the band to sing on the entire album.

Carmen quickly became involved in this project given her own vision in some particular aspects of the album. She wrote all lyrics and made some changes by polishing details. The result is a great album from this Norwegian trio which has been released on April.

Savn, which means “deprivation”, reflects throughout the songs different moments and states in life in which this deprivation is present, but the songs leave you an opened door to hope and there are good feelings inside of them. This is an album full of fantastic melodies, heavy touches, great folk elements and catchy songs which transmites you very good vibrations. I absolutely recommend you to listen this great release.

“Musical Silence”, first track on the album, with a fantastic melody, nice folk elements and very significant lyrics, I think it is a good start for Savn’s album, that in my opinion, truly reflects a double silence, musically speaking, of course. On the one hand, the “silence” of Carmen as a singer since that his band Midnattsol become inactive due to personal commitments whitin the band. On the other hand, the “silence” of Stig and Anders, which after long years of inactivity with The Sin Of Thy Beloved, they come back to break this “musical silence” with this new project called Savn and this great debut album.

The single “Hang On” is really a fantastic track with a great work of Stig on guitars, a catchy melody and the sweet voice of Carmen, which at the same time that the surrounding keyboards invites you to fly high and take a look beyond, there is always a way better than end your life.

“The Demons In Me” is a song very cool, it reminds me a bit to Paradise Lost band in some parts in which we hear on vocals to guest musician Michelle Darkness, vocalist of the German band End Of Green, folk elements are presents again on this track with a great result and I think the fantastic duality of Michelle and Carmen on vocals along the song is perfectly synchronized, I would even go so far as to say that, somehow Michelle represents the despair of that state of anxiety that we see in the song’s lyrics, and Carmen represents a little bit of hope in the fighting against these demons within. At least this is the feeling that I get to listen to this fantastic song with Michelle Darkness.

Starting with a nice piano, “Longing For Love” is a track that is increasing step to step its intensity, it has good changes of pace, keyboards melody is really fantastic and Carmen is excellent! I have to say that Carmen is amazing along each song in the album. Really her voice catches you!

“Sorrowful” is a song with a nice surrounding sound and good choruses with fantastic additional strings from Lingua Mortis Orchestra, directed and recorded by composer and Rage’s guitarist Victor Smolski, which we can hear again on “Lengselens Hand” track.

“All I Want” is a another catchy song with very good guitars and nice keyboards in which Carmen is fantastic one more time. With great choruses and fresh changes of pace this is another good track in the album.

Growling on “Now or Never” is really awesome and complements perfectly the Carmen’s voice on this track, intense choruses, fantastic keybords line and nice folk touches printing a very good dynamism given as a result an amazing song.

“Lengselens Hand” is the most quiet song in the album that starts with a beautiful piano melody, it’s really intense and the collaboration of Lingua Mortis is awesome, acustic guitars and folk touches are fantastic on this track, it’s a song full of feelings in which keyboards seems as they are marking the entry and out of Carmen along the song. This is the most marked folk track, Norwegian folk, of course, and the musical explosion at the end part is amazing.

The last two tracks in the album are growling versions of “Hang On” and “The Demons In Me”. After I have listened to them, sincerously, I don’t know which version I prefer, the original are very good, but these growling versions have also great details, these voices are really cool… Ok, I recommend you to listen to them, enjoy the different versions and leave your own comments below this post.

I have left “I Am Free” song for the end, because I really see me reflected on it, on its lyrics, and its sound is really very cool. I have to say that it is definitely my favorite track in the album. I love it! Starting with great keyboards, the song increases displaying an awesome sound, growling parts are simply fantastic and I love the sweet choruses, Carmen and her sister Liv Kristine (singer of Leave’s Eyes as guest musician on this song), are excellent and folk touches are amazing one more time.
