Review: Treat Greek Deli, Brimingham

By Thefoodiecoupleblog

The Great Western Arcade in the Business District of Birmingham is well known for its fantastic little boutique shops, selling everything from wine to chocolate to gifts as well as a couple of fab restaurants too in Sushi Passion and Bistro 1847. Well now it’s also home the Treat Greek Deli, a recently opened and family run little haven offering authentic Greek food and produce.

I went along last week to have a chat to the owners and find out a bit more about what they have on offer.

Chatting to the family and staff it was clear to see their passion for the food from their homeland, and the care and attention they have put into the Deli itself.

The space is small but used really well, with colours reflecting those of the Greek flag. The shelves are stacked full of really interesting sounding products such as Sweet and Sour Fig sauce, and ‘Spoon Sweet Cherry’ , greek olive oil, with traditional breads and baked goods cover the counter tops. Such breads include Tsoureki – a sweet egg enriched braided bread.

As well as this they offer a whole range of options for breakfast and lunch to eat in at the their small seating area or to takeaway with you. To drink we tried out some of their coffee (super strong!) or a fresh fruit smoothie with yoghurt.

And to eat we devoured morsels of savoury delicacies such as Traditional Cheese or Spinach Pies (made with olive oil filo), Chicken Gyros, Pizzarela and Greek Salad Sandwiches. They also do a range of salads and many other pies and pastries including a Cretan Monastery Pie.

It was the sweet treats that stole the show for me though, a thouroguhly fantastic Bugatsa – manmade olive oil filo with milk, semolina and vanilla cream and a Pumpkin Pie rich with cinnamon and spice.
