The first time we came across the Wild Rabbit was back in 2014 when we stayed the the village of Kingham for a night, with the purpose of eating at the Kingham Plough. We had a few drinks in the Wild Rabbit, which back then was quite new I believe and thought it had the potential to be a great place. Fast forward to the end of 2015 and the Wild Rabbit has a fresh new Head Chef Tim Allen, straight from Michelin Starred London Restaurant Launceston Place.
The interior is lovely -think rustic country pub but done to the highest standard. You can watch the chefs on the pass too, plating up the lovely food you are about to eat.
We were there for lunch, and chose from a small but well rounded menu. First up for Lee was Soft Leeks, Goats Curd, Crispy Sourdough, Onion Ash. Unusual for him to choose something veggie but this dish stood out and the resounding verdict was a big thumbs up.
I went for Crisp Pigs Head, Piccalilli Purée, Pickled Vegetables. The Pigs head came encased in finger shaped croquettes and was moist and flavoursome and I must admit that I think making piccalilli into a purée is one of the most inspired ideas I’ve seen in a while! A really well balanced starter that stayed light and fresh.
For mains it was great to see some more unusual things on the menu such as Skate, Partridge and Teal. Despite these fab options, I couldn’t see past the Organic Lamb with Jerusalem Artichoke, Ras al Hanout and Strained Yoghurt. Cooked perfectly this was heaven on a plate with the earthy artichokes cooked several ways, including a piece of crispy skin which was SO moreish.
Lee decided to try the Teal, which was served with red cabbage slaw, hay baked celeriac and sprout leaves. Lee is a sucker for celeriac, it’s one of his favorite vegetables and this, baked in hay was superb. Teal for those who don’t know is a type of game/duck and had a lovely gamey taste.
The presentation of all the dishes was top notch but favorite of the day was Lee’s choice of dessert – how pretty does that look!
I’m ashamed to say I forgot to take any notes at all about the composition of the desserts so can’t tell you specifically what they were as Ive forgotten – Lee’s above was a delicious apple and caramel concoction, whilst mine below was William Pear done several ways and Chocolate. What I can say is they were both fantastic!
The Wild Rabbit in Kingham also has some adjoining rooms, so would make a great overnight break for any Foodie Couple!
