At Nosh & Quaff the premise seems very simple. Lobster, meat, good beer and good ‘messy’ fun. And thats certainly what happened on our first visit.
To start off with, the building is gorgeous. Exposed brick, leather seating and high quality fittings along with some original features, particularly if you take a trip in the lift down to the basement toilets where the old vault used to be.
We sat near the window on the 1st floor, with a beautiful view over Victoria Square. Our servers were friendly and efficient, and despite what I’d heard from the launch night the food arrived in super quick fashion.
The menu is small and designed for feasting. Theres no starters or mains division, just a simple choice of 5-6 dishes and a range of sides. If I’m honest I wanted to try it all and had to reign in it a little. At least that leaves things to try on subsequent visits I guess!
I chose the Lobster, served with garlic lemon butter whilst Lee had the Pork Ribs. We shared a Blooming Onion, Mac & Cheese, Buttered Corn and extra Pickles. Yes, we are piglets.
I couldn’t fault my lobster. Provided with lobster crackers, pick and bib I was ready to go.
It was very well cooked and I really enjoyed the tangy sauce. Accompanying chips were decent but I hardly made a dent in them with all the other food. Lee enjoyed the ribs that were very tender although they were not very ‘saucy’. Luckily the sauce that accompanied our extra pickles and onion more than made up for this. I believe this was the house sauce – a tangy slightly piquant burger type sauce that was extremely moreish.
Both the Mac & Cheese and Blooming Onion Side were excellent, and the buttered corn some of the best Ive had. A ‘would you like some corn with your butter madam?’ kind of side. Perfect!
We couldn’t resist the pull of dessert, but shared one between us – the Rocky Road. A really indulgent chocolate celebration. I particularly loved the light as air marshmallows that were dotted over it.
Nosh & Quaff had some amazing hype pre-opening and I was a little worried that it wouldn’t meet expectations but as usual Aktar Islam & Jabbar Khan have excelled and Nosh & Quaff can proudly sit alongside their other successes Fiesta del Asado, Lasan & Raja Monkey.
