Review: Fishy Fishy Cafe, Kinsale Ireland

By Thefoodiecoupleblog

Fishy Fishy was the stop for our 3rd night on our little trip round Ireland. It came highly recommended by our B&B owners and the owner and chef is somewhat of a celebrity in Ireland I believe. I like to imagine him as an Irish Rick Stein!

A large restaurant inside it was done out very nicely. The atmosphere was lively and it certainly seemed like the place to be.  A giant fish statue on the bar was a little disconcerting, but did the job incase you’d forgotten the reason you were there: to eat fish.

Homemade bread and taramasalata started things off which was really tasty.

Lee chose to try more Oysters, these served with tabasco and Bloody Mary sauce. I think he even preferred these to those the night before. I went for one of the nights specials – Crab Claws with Sweet Chilli and Garlic Cream.  These were beautifully soft and popped out of the claws with minimal effort.

Mains wise I chose a Seared Tuna Steak while Lee when for their signature Fish Pie.

Portions were immense and we couldn’t finish them. Flavours were decent but not outstanding, and if I’m honest we were left a little disappointed with the mains, especially when the starters were so great. It wasn’t bad food as such, just nothing that made you sit back and think, ‘wow’. Macarons to finish in lieu of dessert were a little odd as they were freezing cold and quite hard – I think they’d been taken straight from the fridge. They weren’t unpleasant to eat, just again, not quite right.

Overall, a ok  meal, but we were expecting much much more.  I wouldn’t be rushing back here if I was in Kinsale again, not with the abundance of restaurants they’ve on offer there.
