Review: Crab House Cafe, Weymouth

By Thefoodiecoupleblog

Another little foodie review from our Dorset trip today – this time a little seafood shack/cafe in Wyke Regis near Weymouth. I read tons of great stuff online about this place – a daily changing menu, fish fresh of the fishing boats from that morning all served up with great service.

When we arrived I loved the look of the place from the outside – it was so cute, and already bustling with a busy lunchtime crowd.

The place was quite small inside but with plenty of outside seating too. There is a core menu, but also a blackboard of the specials that day.

True to form, Lee had oysters to start, and for him, these were the best out of the three lots he had on the holiday.

I had the Asian Style Squid Salad – the salad was crunchy and fiery and the squid oh so tender, a winning dish for me.

Chose off the blackboard for my main – Jerk Huss with a Pomegranate & Cauliflower  Tabouleh. I’d never heard of huss – but the waiter described it as a bit like swordfish. It was a really meaty fish, a bit like monkfish but with a softer texture. It was nice, but I wasn’t completely sold on it. The flavours if the marinade and tabouleh however were great.

Lee had Hake with a Summer Vegetable Broth which he wasn’t blown away with unfortunately  – he felt the fish was a bit overcooked and it was a bit bland.

Family friendly? As you might expect with a small place like this it wasn’t the best kitted out place for smaller children, I wouldn’t try and take a pram inside, although you would be fine outside. There is changing table in one of the toilets, a tight fit but workable. The staff were really friendly towards Imogen though.

I really liked the vibe of the place, and the fact the fish was so fresh. I really enjoyed my food on the whole and think Lee was maybe just unlucky with his main. E would certainly go back again if we were nearby.
