Review: Byron Burger Birmingham

By Thefoodiecoupleblog

A while back we were first introduced to Byron and their ‘proper hamburgers’ when they launced over in Leicester and really enjoyed our first experience of them. Unfortunately Leisceter isn’t close enough to Birmingham to allow regular visits so we haven’t managed to go back since. Luckily for us, one has just opened a couple of weeks ago! We popped long on opening weekend to check it out.

I really quite liked the turquoise and yellow exterior of the building, it certainly stands out on the rather dreary New Street. Our welcome was very warm, and the staff were great at pushing a couple of tables together not far from the door so we didn’t have to negotiate our huge pram and mini foodie further into the very busy restaurant.

The restaurant doesnt really do ‘starters’ as such, but theres a few things to choose from to nibble on ‘while you wait’ including tortilla chips which we’d had previously and nachos but what caught my eye were the Buffalo Chicken Wings. I was actually super impressed with these, they were crispy fried and juicy with a killer of a buffalo sauce and served with a blue cheese dip which I love to counteract that heat. We only had 6 to share which was the main mistake – next time we will order more!

The burgers at Byron are served pink and they come nice and juicy. And messy. Lee went for the B-Rex: Onion ring, streaky bacon, american cheese, jalepenos, pickles and BBQ sauce. He very much enjoyed it. He liked that they don’t try and put TOO many ingredients with the burger that the patty itself gets lost in the detail, but just enough to highlight the meat.

I decided upon the Clucky Balboa: Fried Chicken, guacamole, sirracha mayonnaise, pickled red onion, sliced pickles and shredded iceberg. I don’t often go for chicken burgers and they are so often a let down with dry over cooked meat etc but this one was certainly an exception. I also opted for the added extra of it being doused with their buffalo sauce – a wise decision!

We opted for a couple of sides to go with the meal, Onion Rings and some Bacon Cheese Topped Fries. We enjoyed the onion rings, but while the chips were ok, they were no more than this and I’ve had better loaded fries elsewhere. That being said, they were hot and seasoned well so they did the job.

As if we couldn’t fit in any more food, we’d been advised to try the Oreo Freaksake, which you can order as a drink or dessert. Advice: Do not order as a drink, it will kill you before you’ve eaten taken a bite of food. Now on the other hand as a pud, divine. Oreo milkshake, brownie, cream, oreo biscuits, caramel and honeycomb. MMMmmm.

Needless to say we rolled out of Byron stuffed and complete.

Disclosure: We were invited to Byron to try out the new restaurant, we were not required to write a positive review.
