A couple of months ago I hopped in my car and headed over to Leamington Spa to meet 3 lovely fellow bloggers and friends of mine for afternoon tea. The afternoon didn’t start off that great for me as being the dunce that I sometimes am, I didn’t look at the venue name closely enough, typed it in my sat nav and ended up in a totally different venue over near Stratford first! Anyway, 30 minutes behind schedule I arrived at Binswood Hall, a listed building only 10 minutes from the heart of beautiful Leamington Spa. It’s actually a very upmarket retirement complex that houses Whittles restaurant. It really was a gorgeous building and done out inside to the highest spec with glittery chandeliers, gilted mirrors, huge glass vases and plush teal velvet chairs.
We very easily whiled away the afternoon with eating, drinking and most importantly lots of catching up and foodie chat.
Sandwiches were decent enough versions, with all the standard fillings and some very overpowering red onion in one, but the afternoon tea stand itself looked a picture when it arrived, complete with mouthwatering looking cakes and cute little milk bottles.
I really enjoyed the scone, large and not at all dry with some very good jam. The clotted cream had melted a little in its pot, but this didn’t detract from the taste.
Both cakes on the stand were divine and indulgent – the Chocolate one especially. A perfectly moist sponge and truly yummy buttercream filling. The Toffee Cheesecake was also a winner and we all devoured it pretty quickly!
The cute milk bottle were however a let down for me, the milk was very thin and I couldn’t tell what it was flavoured with as it was so subtle. Very much like drinking plain skimmed milk. A shame, particularly as it looked good.
A very enjoyable afternoon in a beautiful location with fabulous people. Not the best afternoon tea I’ve had but overall pretty good with a few stand out cakes and just a couple of lack luster items, and at £16.95, a very decent price.
