In an effort to increase the non-baseball entertainment level during Red Sox games even as "the sellout streak" goes on, the team announced yesterday that they will be offering between-innings bungee jumping from the Green Monster Seats.
"I've tried it several times myself," John Henry said yesterday at the press conference, while his colleagues looked at him skeptically. "It's a feeling of euphoria the likes of which I have not felt since we came back to beat the Yankees four straight in 2004."
Bobby Valentine, always feeling the need to one-up everyone, said that he actually tried it from the top of the foul pole, and eventually from the light tower. "To be honest, jumping from the Monster Seats is kind of for wusses, not that anyone believes John actually jumped. I need a real adrenaline rush!" Valentine also mentioned that Ben Cherington tried the Monster Seat jump, but vomited all over the warning track and begged to be saved. "Thanks for sharing that, Bobby," Cherington said. "I was hoping that would be made public."
For now, the Sox will offer the jump only between innings, but Larry Lucchino did not rule out amending that policy. "Frankly, I think it would be hysterically funny to have people jumping down in front of the opposing team's left fielder during the game. Might help up win some games. You try catching a fly ball when you've got a person flying through the air right in front of you."
