Two hundred and eighty nine (289) competitors set off yesterday at 8 am on the first stage, a 41.1 km (25.7 mile) race.
At 12:11:40 the first place competitor arrived at the camp, Neill Weir (GBR) followed by Romain Maria (FRA) at 12:11:46, Ilulian Rotariu of (ROM) at 12:17:29 and Ralph Crowley of the United States at 12:18:32. The weather was hot with a light breeze. Neill said "The views were amazing, I could not believe the scenery."
Richard Bray (NZL) made it home in 5th place, 4:35:53.
Sarah Sawyer (GBR) led the women building some breathing space over second placed Magdalena Paschke from Germany. Third spot saw three runners finish within 30 seonds of each other with Rhianon West crossing the line before Luisâ Balsamo, Italy, 5:57:39 and Chizuru Inque, Japan, 5:57:45.
There were 4 drops.
The second stage, 37.2 km (23.3 miles), is called "Patagonia Express" and will take competitors along a dirt track to a bridge over a fast flowing river, then down through a valley to a train track. The stage will end at Perito Moreno Train Station, a historic train station that was the first to bring people to the Patagonia area decades ago.
Weather today is expected to be hot with mild winds.
