Since I turned from writing nonfiction to making things up, I’ve discovered that one of the best ways to learn is while being entertained. In other words, most times, I can learn more from a novel than from searching through an informative text. And I get to immerse myself in another world, one of my favorite pastimes.
Helen Stewart is a sister menopause goddess from Down Under. She has authored a wonderful novel about menopause – and support: Phoebe McKinley and the Menopause Support Group. Helen’s characters are quirky and real. They are beset by all manner of menopausal maladies while they try to cope with life. You may see yourself or some of your friends in them. You will likely come to love all of them.
Phoebe McKinley is in her 70’s. She begins the support group because her doctor has taken her off the hormones that sustained her since her hysterectomy at age 35 – and now, she is in the throes of menopause for the first time. She is suffering from intense hot flushes and headaches. Sound familiar? Phoebe is a take-charge woman, so she proactively starts the Menopause Support Group. Members suffer from various difficulties from the Big M and in their lives. The support they gain from one another helps not only to ease their menopause transitions, it ultimately turns them into family for each other.
Our original Menopause Goddess group sure had that experience! Although, I will say (spoiler alert, but I don’t think I’m giving too much away) we never had a man in our group! That’s all I’ll say about that – you’ll have to read the book to find out more.
This is a truly enjoyable read. Settle in with a cup of tea, put your feet up, and join Phoebe and her Menopause Support Group. As the group members learn alternatives and natural remedies that help them, you will learn right along with them. It’s the perfect both-and! Enjoy!
