Overcoming the Dangers of Open Wi-Fi

Over the last couple months the media have exposed the dangers in using open Wi-Fi - an issue for many of us who connect by Wi-Fi when cruising. "Open" Wi-Fi refers to connecting to any Wi-Fi router not secured with a password, whether at your marina, a coffeehouse, or an unsecured Wi-Fi you happen to find in harbors when you're cruising. The "Firesheep" add-on to the Firefox web browser, for example, allows someone near an open Wi-Fi to gain access to private information of others using that Wi-Fi router.
