My Luxury Beauty Buy: Silk Pillowcase

By Joanna Koh

Hey everyone!

Sorry I haven’t posted in a few days, was busy working at weddings over the weekend and planning for a wedding makeup talk that I’ll be presenting at a wedding show tomorrow! Will post more on that later this week for your info!

I’m starting a new section here featuring luxury beauty / wellness products and services that I’ve bought with my cold hard cash, then review and rate it. Being pretty prudent, I don’t buy more than one or two non-essential products monthly, so I hope to do one of these posts every month.

A couple of months back, I found an online beauty store called Cult Beauty which offers free shipping for orders above £50. I landed there while searching for Anastasia Brow Wiz Pencils (love love love!), but also ended up getting the Silk Pillowcase by Holistic  Silk (£45).

I had been reading and hearing about how wonderful silk pillowcases are and felt like it was time to give it ago. The benefits I wanted it for were

  • Great for your hair and doesn’t cause it to go frizzy or static-y while you sleep
  • Doesn’t tug at your skin so it won’t cause pre-mature wrinkling

Given that I’m a side sleeper, I frequently wake up with creases running down the side of my face. Pretty embarrassing too, sometimes they end up pretty deep and I show up at my job an hour after waking up with a crease on my cheek.
How else do silk pillowcases claim to be of help?

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Repels dust mites
  • Non-absorbent material will not soak up your expensive skin care
  • Prevents snagging of hair

The pillowcase arrived (I bought it in white) with a sachet of dried lavender flowers to promote sleep (which I didn’t use).

My review:

Small on size
The size is 67cm x 45cm (not listed on site), and was a little small for my pillow. The underside is sort of stretched with my pillow threatening to bust out. Well, it hasn’t. I just sleep on the top side and that’s fine.
I also use my regular pillow protector under the case, so if I took that out it won’t be so bulky inside the silk case.

Super satin-y smooth, supple and soft
No complains about the texture of the silk here. It is truly unlike any pillowcase I’ve ever used. I usually sleep on high thread count egyptian cotton sheets, but silk feels completely different from cotton.
The silk case here isn’t thin like your silk blouse. It has a rather dense weave, similar to satin pillowcases.
However, being so ultra smooth, I feel like my head tends to slide down the pillow during the night. If I happen to wake up in the middle of the night, I have to readjust my position.

No more waking up with creases on my face
Yes, this is so true! Ever since I’ve started using the pillowcase, I don’t get any more creases on my face at all. Means I reduce the chance of developing deep wrinkles on the side of my face from those eight hour creases while I sleep which happened previously.

I break out less
A uncle who owned a laundry store once told me that bedsheets and pillowcases need to be washed more thoroughly because they absorb a lot of oils from the body. That’s not surprising. When we spend 8 hours on the sheets, the oils from our scalp, face products and creams get absorbed into our pillowcases. With silk not absorbing the oils and creams, it doesn’t transfer back onto our faces and cause that breakout from bacteria (btw bacteria also feeds on oils).

My hair frizzes far less
I have wavy and frizzy hair. I don’t mind it that much, but I could do with smoother hair. Yesterday I spent half an hour blow drying my hair after my shower and getting it as smooth as I could. This morning I woke up and it was pretty much the same! On other days I leave my hair naturally curly and when I wake up, it doesn’t frizz. I don’t have those “bed head hair” mornings anymore.

So with all these said, I am really happy with the pillowcase! It’s effect and benefits almost justify the £45 *cough* price tag. Usually that price can buy me a pretty decent sheet set. Thankfully there are coupon codes out there that you can get to get a discount off your Cult Beauty purchase.I got about 15% off. OH! And when you ship to Singapore, they minus the VAT so the price will be about £37.50.

I would recommend anyone with any skin allergies and problems like eczema and rosacea to give this pillowcase a try as well.

I rate it 4/5 ! I would give it a perfect score of 5 if it was made in a slightly larger size(for fluffy pillows!).
