Ekka is a place that I’ve fallen in love with since ten years ago, then go back to again and again.
I pitched myself to Ekka to be one of their featured fashion bloggers this year, and felt greatly honoured to be treated to their VIP Fashion Parade Preview night and also wrote a feature blog post on their blog.
Being such an huge fan ambassador for Ekka in the past years and a style addict, I was thinking, how would I be able to associate and present my Ekka experience as the ultimate fashion stylist’s playground? What are indeed ‘Ekka fashion’ and ‘Ekka style’? Underneath the surface of ‘country fun fair’ vibe, the cowboy boots and traditional Australian Akubra hats, there’s got to be a refreshing angle to create a story of Ekka with a unique style.
I was in luck that I found my muse while I interviewed Gail Reid, the creator and fashion designer behind her label Gail Sorronda. Gail’s design concept sounds a little bit Zen, she described her collection as ‘showcasing duality and contrast’. To me she’s the master of ’Yin’ and ‘Yang’ who creates an artistic balance between the two contrasting forces. That was when my inspirations striked, what if there’s a contrasting angle to the fun fair Ekka vibe? What if I can create a story capturing the ‘dark’ side of Ekka? Beneath the eyes of the laughing clowns and hard plastic dolls lie some sort of creepiness, or dark romanticism as I called it.
I was all excited about the sparks and ideas I had, then I came across Daniel Groneberg behind That Street Guy blog who turned these story ideas into series of compelling photo essays. I’m naturally drawn to colourful images, but seeing how Daniel portraits Brisbane Southbank in black and white had my jaw dropped – I was blown away with the way he plays with lights, shades and striking contrasts, and I knew we would just click!
We’ll let the images tell you the rest of our story…

Itching to see how we went with our black and white shots too? I’m creating a bit of suspense here to entice you to follow my blog and ThatStreetGuy for more Ekka buzz to come…
