When Travelodge recently got in touch about finding Hidden Gems it really got me thinking. There’s lots of gems in Birmingham, but are they really hidden? For those visiting Birmingham, or even those that live here , I think the following 5 are all great places that are just a little off the beaten track of the main shopping and eating areas really worth checking out.
And obviously, because that’s what my blogs all about, they’re (mostly) food based!! So go on, expand your horizons past the Bullring, Brindley Place and Cadbury World and explore some of my hidden gems!
The Great Western Arcade
Ok, so this isn’t exactly hidden, but in my opinion not enough people investigate this pretty arcade in the business district of Birmingham. It’s home to a fantastic tiny little Sushi restaurant, Sushi Passion, a couple of Lovely delis in Anderson & Hill and Treat Greek, independent wine merchants Loki, and much more.
Peel & Stone Brunch at The Church
The backroom of this lively pub turns into a haven for brunch lovers at the weekend when Bakery Peel and Stone move in and create really tasty dishes, with bottomless tea and coffee, the weekends papers and fresh baked goods to buy and take home.
The Pickled Piglet
Found down a side street off the bustling Broad Street, this restaurant and cafe serves up fresh food daily. It’s take on British Tapas is a favorite with me and I’m yet to have a duff dish there. They’ve recently had a bit of a refurbishment too and the atmosphere is always friendly and relaxed.
Digbeth
If you take a walk about 10 minutes east from the city center you will find Digbeth. A wealth of street art, vintage and unique shops awaits you, as well as quirky restaurants like Rico Libre – serving up unusual tapas style food.
Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park
Avoid the crowds at Cadbury World or the Sea Life Centre and take a 5 minutes drive from the city centre, near Canon Hill Park and Edgbaston Cricket Ground to find the Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park. There’s a variety of animals to see including reptiles and monkeys, and you can also watch them being fed. Agreat day out for adults and kids alike.
