In class last week, two students got up to present. They both did excellent and delivered GREAT presentations. During one of the presentations I thought maybe this guy should be a Professor someday because he seemed so comfortable in front of the class! Then at the end he almost fell over because he couldn’t feel his legs because he was so nervous and hated group presentations. I told him he did great and he said, “No I didn’t, I am my own worse critic.”
It made me think of how many things we are really good at that other people think we are great at too. But, we don’t think so. This guy could go on to teach many other people but if he always thinks he is a terrible presenter, he won’t be all that he is capable of.
So my advice this week is to listen carefully to the compliments you receive. What can you take from them and how can you stop being your own biggest critic?
