September is Menopause Awareness Month – and to celebrate, we have a special guest post from Angela Verges. She is one of my favorite menopause goddesses. I love her humor – she knows that if we don’t laugh, we might just cry for the better part of forever. Speaking of which, you will love her book: Menopause Ain’t No Joke. Details on a special offer at the end of the post. Enjoy this offering!

Men-It To Pause by Angela Verges

Menopause can have you feeling as though you’re living a fairytale. Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, and Snow White, had wicked stepmothers We have the evil menopause – We’re trying to conquer, overcome, or transition through symptoms. How often do you take time to pause and engage in self-care? Press pause on everything going on around you.

Take a men-it to pause. September is celebrated as Menopause Awareness Month, a perfect time to focus on your needs. If you’re already doing this, help someone else get there. During September, make your menopausal health a priority. Focus on things that will help you thrive. Here are three ways to help you thrive:

Practice Gratitude – during the month of September create a gratitude journal or a gratitude jar. Each day write down something that you are grateful for. It can be simple or profound, you decide. It feels good to reflect on the good things in life. It has been said that gratitude, improves our health, relationships, emotions, and career (happierhuman.com/benefits-of-gratitude).

Laugh More – Find something every day that makes you smile. Try it right now. Think of a story or situation that made you smile – was it something a child said, a funny movie, or a slip of the tongue that made you feel silly?

It’s easy to lose your sense of humor during menopause. Use laughter for its many health benefits. It relaxes your body and helps you forget your problems and worries (even if only temporary). There are funny things all around us, observe, see what you find. Here’s something that happened to me during a road trip:

We took so many bathroom breaks, you would have thought I had the bladder of a hamster. One place we stopped to use the restroom had a sign on the locked door that yelled at me:  PLEASE SEE CASHIER FOR KEYS TO RESTROOM!!!

I walked back to the counter to ask for a key, the cashier handed me the key, zip-tied to an 18-inch nightstick, or maybe it was a plunger handle.

All I could think was, did she give me this for protection? Should I anticipate an altercation on my short walk from the counter to the bathroom?

Exercise – move your body at a level that is comfortable for you. Take a walk and absorb the beauty of nature, practice Yoga to stretch your muscles, or work in a garden. Consult your doctor before starting a workout. These tips are things that I’ve tried and found helpful. If you find it difficult to fit exercise into your routine. Get an accountability partner. Not someone who will criticize you, but will say, “Let’s do this girlfriend.”

Take a men-it to pause. Take care of you. Hansel and Gretel made it through the scary forest, Cinderella found her prince, and Snow White had seven men falling for her. We will survive and transition through menopause, together.
