MCU Mondays: Nalani & Sarina

Posted on the 06 April 2015 by Music Creates Us @musiccreatesus

Nalani & SarinaIdentical twin sisters and pop/rock duo Nalani & Sarina‘s music crosses over numerous genres. In addition to writing all the tracks on the upcoming album, Scattered World, the classically trained musicians show off their skills by playing piano, guitar, and ukulele on the album. Because of this, it comes as no surprise that their musical inspirations vary as well.

This month, the duo created a playlist of songs that have inspired them over the years. Read what they’ve said about the songs they’ve chosen and subscribe to their playlist here.

We are fans of all types of music so these songs range from folk to funk to rock and everywhere in between.  Some are songs that we grew up with, while some are more recent musical discoveries; but regardless, they have all shaped our sound in some way over the years. We really love strong melodies so we’ve always been fans of pop music, although we feel there has been an absence of musical integrity and lyrical substance in popular music nowadays.  So this is partly why most of the artists we’ve chosen are outside of our generation.  We were raised on a mixture of folk and rhythm & blues, but have developed a deep appreciation for 60’s soul music over the past few years. Recently, we saw some live concerts (Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac) which inspired us immensely in our writing and in our own live performances.  In general, we are drawn to and impacted by songs that have something to say and speak from the soul (and of course, make your body move!)
