Traditionally we make changes to our home in spring and fall. In spring time it’s all about throwing open the windows, airing the house and letting the sunlight in. We tend to go through a reversal of this process before winter. We batten down the hatches, draw the curtains and brace ourselves for the long dark months ahead. But these days I find that I want to make more changes throughout the year. I blame Instagram. Being constantly exposed to other people’s homes and interior decor stirs up that creative spirit and the desire to make changes.

For most of us, it’s not possible to completely overhaul and revamp our homes whenever the mood strikes. But there are some easy peasy twists we can make to transform the look of our internal spaces.

  1. Cushions

The introduction of a few carefully placed cushions can give a completely new look to most rooms. They can breathe new life into your dull and saggy sofa and add a little opulent charm to the bedroom. Rather than buying off the shelf and ending up with the same style as everyone else, consider making your own. Starting with some good quality duck feather cushion pads, just add fabric. There are countless online stores that sell remnants and off-cuts. And if you’re feeling particularly thrifty re-purpose an old garment.

Making cushions takes no time at all, especially if you have access to a sewing machine. It’s just three seams and a few buttons or press studs down one side. And the beauty is that you can change them as often as you like, depending on your whims. Use them to create vibrancy and warmth. Or adopt cooler tones to create the illusion of calm and serenity.

  1. Washi Tape

Washi tape has taken the craft world by storm, and you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. After all, isn’t it just pretty masking tape? The answer, of course, is yes but it has so many different uses. And it’s not just all about crafts. Just a few carefully placed strips can transform furniture and accessories. For example, add a little washi tape to plain photo frames to add color and interest. You don’t have to cover the whole frame; sometimes a few short strips are enough. Shelves can also come to life by covering the edges with strips of tape. It can also be applied to plant pots, vases, and even lampshades.

The thing about washi tape is that it is quick and easy to apply. It is also versatile and inexpensive, allowing you to make changes as often as you wish.

  1. Changing The Space

If you’re feeling bored with a particular room, change the space. What happens when you move your sofa to the opposite side of the room? Or you change the position of your armchairs? Does the TV cable stretch to the far corner? And what about that lamp? Switching out a few key pieces of furniture can create a completely different look and feel and it doesn’t cost a thing.

  1. Shelves

And speaking of moving things around, shelves can also make a big difference. Large bookcases take up a lot of space, and so making changes will transform that whole area. Don’t just opt for a traditional linear structure. Think out of the box a little. Books don’t have to be stored on their sides. Place some flat on top of each other. Intersperse with plants and ornaments.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to make changes to your home. A few twists here and there to add color and interest will make all the difference.
