Knockdown at Cape Horn

By Sailingguide

Like a cat with nine lives, solo sailor Jeanne Socrates has weathered another near-disaster in her third circumnavigation attempt. While she was hove to off Cape Horn in 40-knot winds and big seas, a violent gust knocked down her 38-footer, Nereida, causing substantial damage and for a time crippling the boat. Jeanne herself, down below when the gust struck, was not injured - which is perhaps better than many sailors would fare, to say nothing of 67-year-olds like Jeanne. With a broken boom and other damage, she's had to dock in Argentina for repairs. You can follow her story on her blog.
