"I think that we've been brainwashed to think that fat is bad, but really,
it's what's going to make you feel fuller, longer."

says actress Vanessa Hudgens,
explaining her commitment to a ketogenic lifestyle.

In case you missed any of these newsworthy stories, here is a wrap on the best real-food-more-fat headlines last month.

  1. Last week in The Globe and Mail, Gary Taubes asks if anecdotal evidence of the efficacy of low-carb diets should be taken more seriously, especially given the unfortunate across-the-board lack of rigorous science in the realm of nutrition.
  2. Life expectancy in the US declined for the second year in a row. Opioid overdoses are behind this year's decline, but the diabetes epidemic's impact may be underestimated.
  3. In The Dallas Morning News, Dr. Jake Kushner asserts "Government is helping to feed the diabetes crisis in Texas," by perpetuating out-of-date, low-fat dietary advice. Kushner writes, "Despite all the new research exonerating fats and implicating carbohydrates, leading nutritionists refuse to reconsider entrenched norms of a healthy diet." Indeed.
  4. A new RCT published in Nutrition & Diabetes documents that an ad libitum (no calorie counting) very-low carb diet outperforms a calorie restricted moderate-carb diet in overweight adults with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.
  5. New meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine shows no significant association between total fat or saturated fat consumption and coronary heart disease deaths.

From the wall of shame

  • Oreo launches new "Fruity Pebbles" flavor. Yabba Dabba Yuck.
  • Post expands its "dessert for breakfast" offerings with launch of Nutter Butter and Chips Ahoy breakfast cereals. #WrongDirection
  • Kraft sponsors patronizing "it's hard being a parent" ad (and Kraft Mac and Cheese can help with that...)
  • I can't believe they found a buyer. Unilever unloads its spreads business (including I Can't Believe It's Not Butter). KKR to purchase for $8.1 billion. Now that's a lot of fake butter.
  • America's corn crop, visualized. Acres of corn grown for sweeteners (like high fructose corn syrup) would cover all of New Jersey.

Finally, for some fun with BUTTER...

Blender butter. Fancy butter. "Glue Stic" butter. Cowboy butter. Old-fashioned butter. Smoked butter. Book on butter. Butter cuisine.

Happy January,
