Is It OK to Interview for a Job I Am Unsure About?

Posted on the 19 August 2011 by Classycareergirl @classycareer

Dear Classy Career Girl, I have had an interesting career dilemma pop up and I wanted to get your opinion. Here’s the situation: This summer I decided to take some time off work and finish my MBA. Then, this amazing opportunity in Minnesota popped up – it is in the industry I love and an executive position. Perfection. I’m from Minnesota, and we have always thought we’d end up back there, so I thought “what the heck,” and applied and got an interview.  At the same time, my husband got a call for an interview in Boston. He really wants the job — we both do.  Do you think it is bad for me to still interview for this position even though we might be moving to Boston instead?  Thanks, Confused applicant

Dear Confused Applicant,

Congrats on the interview!  You should definitely interview for the position because you never know what might happen with your husband’s job offer.  Not until you both have two job offers would I start to worry about which opportunity to take.  Interviews are an excellent way to practice answering tough questions and to learn more about the industry that you want to get into.  The benefit you will have in this situation is that hopefully you will be less nervous during the interview.  This will give you the confidence you need to nail this interview and interviews later on down the road.  The bad side, you will have to try extra hard to show your excitement for the job. Most interviewers can tell very quickly if you really want the job or not.  They don’t want to hire someone who doesn’t really want to be in the position.  You don’t want to give any warning signs to this potential employer because you really don’t know what might happen with your husband’s job offer.

Keep all off your options open.  Your husband might even get the job offer but not like the people he interviewed with.  So maybe he will decide not to take it and then you are moving to Minnesota!  If you don’t interview, you might be kicking yourself later!

I hope this helps!  Good luck on the interview!
