Oh yes, I can put myself about a bit when I'm in the mood and yesterday, somewhat late in the day - or year, or decade, really - I have finally caught up with Janet Daley of The Telegraph. Of course, I've seen her before, usually hanging around in the columns, as it were, obviously hoping to meet me, but alas, I have ignored her and now that I have actually read her I could kick myself! Sorry, Janet, darling, but from now on I am yours!
Yesterday in The Telegraph she had an excellent if somewhat bitter article warning the purblind that 'Milipede' is so irredeemably thick that he really intends to return the Labour party to the policies of the 1970s. I suppose he has some slight excuse given that he was only born in 1969 and that he enjoyed an affluent lifestyle courtesy of his mega-rich, Marxist father. Even so, he has only to look over the channel to see a living, breathing - well, gasping, really! - French economy slowly dying under more or less the same policies he is proposing for Britain.
I mentioned that Ms. Daley was also somewhat bitter and that, I admit, is something of an understatement, she is positively acidic!
Advocating rent and price controls ought to sound as ridiculous as recommending
a witch doctor as a substitute for antibiotics. Yet here we all are, fighting
proposals that should be patently preposterous when we ought to be proclaiming
(as David Cameron says repeatedly) the success of the Conservative strategy for
economic recovery. But exasperating as it must be for Mr Cameron and his
Chancellor to see Labour’s latest absurd pitch being given what appears to be
careful and serious consideration, they have no one to blame but themselves. It was their calculated decision to downplay (putting it mildly) the ideological triumph of Thatcherite economic liberalism. [My emphasis]
How deeply embarrassing it must have been for the non-Conservative party when 'that woman' had the infernal bad manners to die whilst they were in office and thus force them to cry their crocadile tears and mutter, not too loudly, what a wonderful leader she had been - whilst desperately hoping the fuss would go away and they could return to their semi-socialism undisturbed by ghosts of yesteryear.
As for the GBP (Great British Public), I have a sinking feeling that they are going to elect 'Milipede' and thus we will all be set to relive history and open up old wounds we thought had been well and truly cauterised. Oh well, never mind, at least I have a new lady in my life!
