I hope you have all been paying strict attention to the German general election. I haven't but then I have an excuse - endless shopping, forever going back to pick up the things I forgot; wrestling with the high technology of washing and drying machines; manouvring a hoover without actually moving any furniture - all that sort of thing. So what's your excuse for failing to keep up with the progress of the AfD - who said "Who?"?
I shall explain. The AfD is the brand, spanking new political party that has arisen in Germany with virulent anti-EU opinions - yes, I know, I know, schockierend, schockierend! But according to Spiegel, the AfD is making a last minute surge in the polls and it might, just might, reach that magic 5% which will guarantee it a seat, or seats, in parliament and that, apparently, would really upset the German political Apfel Warenkorb - for goodness sake, that means 'apple cart', don't you know any German?! Of course, Spiegel, being a totally soppy Lefty newspaper raises its fastifious eyebrows at sundry Right-wingers who have joined the AfD but happily, so far, there has been no sign of a jackboot.
