One of my favorite quotes by Jack Canfield is “Everything you want is out there waiting for you to ask. Everything you want also wants you. But you have to take action to get it.” If you feel stuck and want this year to be full of change in your life, here are some steps to take to start creating more opportunities in your life.
1) Get Busier.
Take more opportunities. Come in early, stay late and offer to help out your teammates before you leave. “Luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances. Show up more often. The harder you work, the luckier you get.” – Brian Tracy
Create a 90-day plan. Where you want to be in 90 days. What additional things do you want to add to your resume in 90 days? Ask yourself what you have to start doing today to make your 5 year vision a reality.
2) Perfect the Present.
Be happy and thankful for what you have right now. Try to clear the clutter to make room for more opportunities. How much time are you spending on social media? Are you too busy right now for more opportunities? Do you say yes to everything? Do you need to say no to TV and yes to a networking event instead?
And remember to treat yourself. Things like a manicure, pedicure, spa day, massage or taking a free day off work can really help you focus and actually become more productive which will help more opportunities come your way! You have to be a positive to attract positive opportunities to happen in your life.
3) Get Out of Debt.
This may seem like it has nothing to do with your career but getting out of debt allowed me to go part time at my job and pursue a career I was totally passionate about. I wasn’t stuck in a job I hated because I had to have a paycheck. Then, other awesome opportunities started to come to me because I cleared out my clutter.
Watch your time management. What is the most valuable use of your time? We all have the same amount of time in each day. It’s what you do with it that matters.
4) Expand Your Knowledge.
How can you learn more about your career field? Being knowledgeable about your industry will help you become more confident to share your ideas and recommendations at work. Once people start seeing you have the knowledge it takes to succeed, opportunities will start coming your way.
Can you read 30 minutes a day about your industry? Can you read the Wall Street Journal to stay on top of trends? Can you go back to school and get a certification or can you look online for courses such as taking a Tutorcare training course online?
5) Change Your Mindset.
Your mindset will make you different than most people out there. You have to see yourself as self-employed. Only 3% of workers see themselves as self-employed so this will make you stand out from the crowd. This means that you are 100% responsibility for your life and where you end up. See yourself as a product that you sell. “You are the CEO of your own life,” says Brian Tracy.
You write your own paycheck. You can’t blame others. You have to take responsibility for your own career success.
6) Expand Your Tribe.
Ask yourself who else is doing the job you would like to have. What are they doing differently than you? How can you get them into your circle and learn from them?
The two best ways to expand your network and meet the people you need to meet are:
1) Informational interviews: This is where you ask them for 15 minutes of their time and you ask them questions. Ask them about their typical day and then see who else they can introduce you to.
2) Networking challenge: Challenge yourself to meet with a certain number of people you know and don’t know every month. I recommend a 4X4 networking challenge where you meet with 4 people you know and 4 people you don’t know every month for a year.
“You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.”
– Jim Rohn
Are the people you are around most of the time building you up or bringing you down? Start surrounding yourself with the people you really want to be like. That’s why I interview career and leadership experts in the Get Ahead Club because they make me a better writer, coach and speaker! Always remember to build up your network inside and outside of your company. Not building your network is one of the biggest mistakes that women make
