How Much Do You Sleep?

By Palka Chopra @arrayofthoughts

I've never been a morning person (and believe me i've always wanted to be one...). It's one thing that doesn't come naturally to me. There have been many times when i've tried to be one but all in vain. I still remember my school and college days when i had to wake up early, but i would feel so sleepy during the classes and lectures and no cups of coffee or tea would make me feel energetic.

Ironically, i have seen so many people around me who have been such early birds, including my lovely dad- i have never seen him miss his morning walks and exercise routines since, well as long as i can remember. And there were times when he was even willing to bribe to wake up early and accompany him for a morning walk (and i would always reply- "i'll pay you double if you let me sleep in"... haha!). Also, both my kids are morning babies (clearly they've not taken after me!!), and as a result we have such busy mornings in our household and no alarm clocks are needed any more. I can assure i am the most grumpy one out of us four during the mornings, my husband is not an early riser either but he's still pretty much chirpy during 'weekday' mornings after 6 hours or even less of sleep. And i feel i am pretty off most of the days if i don't get atleast 7 straight hours in (and it's been ages since i got that, thanks to the lil infant that we have at home now).

Researchers say that you need your happy eight hour 'beauty' sleep every night. How much do you get every night? I am trying to get to bed early these days, just to have better early mornings. But being a night owl for most of my life, it's hard to actually get into bed early. Most of the times i lie awake unwinding and thinking about the day, or making to-do lists for the next day. It's clearly a work in progress.

And then i go online to read up on sleep patterns and it turns out in order to be an Indra Nooyi or a Tom Ford you gotta sleep less! Well, all my future plans have just gone down the drain (hahaha...).

How do you unwind for an early night in and have a less grumpy morning the next day?
