We've all been guilty of putting off some of the tasks that need doing around the house. Some of those little jobs can be left with no problems, but some tasks should be taken care of before they turn into bigger problems. Here are the home repairs you should never put off doing.
Grouting Or Caulking
Caulk isn't expensive, but it still has a very important job. Caulk keeps water out of places that water shouldn't be. Look around your shower, bath, windows, and doors on a regular basis to check for any spots that might need to be caulked or grouted again. If there is, get on it straight away, as repairing water damage is a lot more expensive to put right than missing caulk.
Foundation Cracks
A crack in your foundation could cause serious problems for the structure of your home, and lower its value. You might be able to tell that your foundation has shifted if you find that your doors don't close like they used to. Inspect the foundation outside your home for any cracks or other signs of movement. If you find a crack that is larger than 3/16 of an inch, you should call in a professional to shore up the foundation.
Roof Repairs
A roof that leaks can lead to some serious problems, including mould, structural damage, and losing personal property. You need to get roof leaks repaired as soon as you find them, or you could find yourself paying for some very expensive repairs.
AC Filter Service
A dirty air filter will make your air conditioning system have to work a lot harder than it should do, and drive up your utility bills at the same time. You can make your AC unit last longer, and make it cheaper to run by not putting off an HVAC Repair and having your filter cleaned once a quarter.
Rotting Decks
Wooden decking can deteriorate and rot, especially if it doesn't get a lot of sunlight. Sometimes, it can be only a small section or a few boards that will rot. Sometimes, the rot can be across the whole deck. This makes the structure of your deck very unsafe and makes any rails around the edge come loose, causing more risk.
You will need to replace any boards that are rotting. For older decks, it's often replacing all the boards so you know they're solid and sturdy, and to give the whole thing a consistent finish. You could place the wood with composite decking. This is more expensive than wood, but it doesn't rot.
Clogged Gutters
Leaves, twigs and other debris can pile up. During bad weather, this will make water spill over your guttering, which can then freeze, creating a slipping hazard. As the water can't flow away from the house, it can also leak into the basement, causing damp. Clean the gutters once or twice a year to keep the water where it's supposed to be. Gutter guards will keep them free of debris.
