I know Thanksgiving was last week and though it's not a Nigerian holiday, I still have loads to be thankful for especially this new month. For us Nigerians, I think the best part of that holiday was what followed....Black Friday Sales.
Oh boy!!! The number of sweet deals that were floating round the internet, home and abroad were to die for...well if you were fast enough to grab them. My phone was buzzing all that day with updates from different online stores I'm subscribed to. Sadly I was literally so busy that I didn't really get around to enjoying black friday and my plans were over before they even began but oh well, life goes on.
However, I wanted to write a quick update on the protective style I'm currently rocking. I installed this two weeks ago as per my current protective styling bootcamp. If you've noticed, harmattan is upon us which means in a few weeks, it's going to be dry-'everything'- from skin to hair and the environment. So protection is important hence this protective style.
I used the Supreme Royal Silk rasta wvg in color 1 for this protective style, please ignore my sweaty face - I had just finished doing a facial and some steaming just before I took these pictures. I left the packaging of the extensions at the Salon so I don't have a picture to share but it's on the internet if you search. I bought a pack of this extension for 2500naira and I used just half of it for this style. A perfect and cheaper alternative to this extension is Noble Natural Braid - looks just about the same and is just as soft, honestly there's no reason not to use it.
It comes as wefted extensions i.e a weave with wefts, but the noble alternative comes as single strands of braiding hair like the regular Marley hair. After cutting off the hair from the wefted edges, the single strands of hair are cut into two sections pictured above. The strand on the left has just been cut into two while that on the right was stretched (or feathered) after being cut in two.
My natural hair was cut into small sections and then braided. Afterwards the feathered hair extension was folded in two around each braided section of my natural hair and sewn onto it with a needle and thread. Lastly, some mousse was applied to each sewn hair extension and rolled around between both palms. Personally, I've seen this hair done better so I wasn't too impressed with the outcome however what I do like the most about this hair is the natural seamless look.
My edges still misbehaving as always.
When it comes to taking care of this hair I'm learning not to be too lazy seeing as I intend to have this in for the next two months and I want my hair coming out of this okay. I spritz my hair every two to three days with a mixture of leave-in conditioner, coconut and castor oils and sometimes I add glycerin to the mixture seeing as these extensions are so drying and are sucking away all the moisture available to my hair. I try to massage my scalp with castor oil at least twice a week and I intend cleaning my scalp this weekend and also deep conditioning my hair every two weeks.
Another plus is the versatility that comes with styling this hairstyle, I can play around with throwing it into a bun or braiding it upwards or sideways. The bun however is my go-to work appropriate look cos I don't want to be looking raggedy in everyone's eyes - not everybody understands the allure of dreads or kinky hair.
