Roses & Revolutions
Feature by Ellie Garno

“I Won’t Break,” the new single from indie-pop duo Roses & Revolutions, premiered with Paste Magazine earlier this week.  Hailing from Rochester, New York, Alyssa Coco and Matt Merritt got together after Coco made it to Hollywood on season 7 of American Idol.  They began writing songs together; each became a fusion of elements of alternative, folk, and pop.  Since their self‐titled debut EP and its follow-up, Torch (2015), Roses & Revolutions has shared stages with Ben Taylor, The Lone Bellow, and The Head and the Heart and gotten the attention of Idolator, American Songwriter, and All Things Go

Coco and Merritt wrote “I Won’t Break” after watching cult classic True Romance.  “It was a really intense moment,” they reflect on a scene in which James Gandolfini tries to get Patricia Arquette to give up the whereabouts of her husband.  “[It] made us ask ourselves, ‘what would I do in that situation?’” Heavy lyrics—a response to the question—contrast with light rhythms.  “I Won’t Break” also features drums by Elliot Jacobson (Ingrid Michaelson) and production by Little Daylight, who lend the song its electric feel.  Other quirks include: “hey!”, some handclaps, and pop punk (thank you).

Roses & Revolutions next take Rockwood Music Hall in New York City on February 23rd for a free, 21+ show, before tour dates with Marian Hill!
