Just two weeks ago, PLGRMS released a new single “Fools And Their Gold” via 0E0E, which we feature here today. Because this isn’t the first we’ve heard from the Australian duo; their “Pieces” amassed over 1.1. million streams, as well as the attention of Hillydilly, Monster Children, and The Line of Best Fit. (The release also follows their live debut alongside Oh Wonder.) The former calls their sound “electronic-washed indie rock for fans of alt-J, SOHN, and Glass Animals,” and we call it fresh.
“Fools And Their Gold” begins with a synthetic, albeit simple, melody, on repeat the rest of the song. The chorus is layered with instrumentals and vocal harmonies, and it ends each time, lastingly, “Just fools and their gold.” The lyrics “I know you’re here for now/You know I’m here for now,” however, best sum up the message. “‘Fools And Their Gold’ speaks of someone denying the inevitable end of a relationship,” explains Jonathan Bowden of PLGRMS. “They can’t—or won’t—let go, despite knowing that it’s not good for them.” As you can hear, PLGRMS does digital well. Still, “Fools And Their Gold” is grounded in its analog percussion (e.g. good ol’ handclaps), thanks to Luke Davison (The Preatures). The track is even minimalist at times, proving that while other vowel-less indie pop groups may come and go, PLGRMS is in it for the long haul.
