Roughly 100 million Americans have diabetes or prediabetes and in the past five years, the spendings on diabetes drugs in the US have more than doubled. Now several independent health care clinics are trying to stop this drug trend.

The Fresh Food Farmacy program being tested by Geisinger Health System in Pennsylvania educates and offers their patients free nutritious meals that can lower diabetes treatments costs by 80%.

Instead of relying solely on drugs to manage the disease, doctors are writing prescriptions for certain patients to enter its Fresh Food Farmacy program

The elite triathlete Sami Inkinen teamed up with a doctor and a scientist and founded Virta Health after managing his own prediabetes with a ketogenic diet. Virta connects patients with doctors to help implement a keto diet and to monitor their biomarkers daily.

The company is working to expand to more coverage from insurers and employers, with the goal of reversing diabetes in 100 million people by 2025
