Creation Stories: Caitlyn Scarlett

We first came across Caitlyn Scarlett late 2017 when she released “Happy When,” and we’ve been hooked ever since. She recently dropped a new EP, Red Tape, Vol 2., and each track is laced with confidence, beautiful melodies, and enchanting lyrics.

We spoke with Caitlyn about how she got her start and the inspiration by notable track, “Ornaments.” Keep reading for more!

How did you get your start?

I got my start by making music with people at the same college as me. I was the only white girl in my class, and all of my friends were rappers who needed vocals hooks, and those were my first sessions looking back. Some of them went on to be really successful also which is cool.

Who or what has inspired your sound and latest track “Ornaments?”

I am inspired by real life most of the time. There is a lot of truth woven in to what I create. I also have some heavy influences on top of that such as women like Bjork, Kate Bush, Lily Allen, Gwen Stefani and Fiona Apple. “Ornaments” is about social anxiety and abandonment issues. It’s basically a page from my diary on a bad day.

What is your favorite show memory?

My Granddad came to the first gig I did and I saw him knicking a cigarette from some boys outside and boasting that I was his granddaughter.

What would be your dream tour and why?

A worldwide one. I feel like i have missed out of years of traveling to stay in London and pursue music. As a person I am really curious to see what the rest of the world has to offer.

Tell us about your writing process; any unusual quirks?

No two sessions are the same when it come to my process. I have a Tumblr which I have been maintaining for the past 8 years and it’s kind of a mood board that I endlessly scroll through while I write. A lot of my songs have melodies in them that start out as freestyles that end up staying in there. My favorite thing about writing is stacking harmonies.

What’s your favorite song to cover?

I would say “Take The Box” by Amy Winehouse

If you were to create a “soundtrack to your life,” what songs would be on it?

“Wuthering Heights” – Kate Bush
“Get Low” – Dog is Dead
“Cheryl Tweedy” – Lily Allen
“Fancy” – Reba McEntire
“Tangled up in Blue” – Bob Dylan

Would you like to add anything else?

Come to my first ever headline show on the 25th of October ! xxx
