Create The Perfect Family Dining Area

By Heather Hahn @HeatherHahnn

A proper place to sit down and dine with the family is so important. Research has shown that families who regularly eat together make better food choices. It encourages healthier eating habits to children and provides the perfect bonding time. So setting up a space where you can all sit together is essential. You definitely don’t need a specific dining room to be able to do this. If there’s not space in your kitchen, it’s worth rejigging your living room to create a dining corner.

Think About Flooring

When food and drinks are getting carried around, spills can happen. Carpet definitely isn’t the most practical choice here since it will hold on to stains and smells. Choosing a wood flooring such as hardwood or laminate is a good choice since it’s easy to clean. Plus it looks sleek and modern too.

Go With Comfy Seating

Style is important, but don’t sacrifice looks over comfort. Go with something that’s nice to sit on so you all enjoy sitting together at the table. If you’re set on wooden chairs, you could add some cushion pads to make them more comfortable. If you go with comfortable chairs, they can be brought through to the living space and used for guests when you’re hosting parties or having people over too for extra seating.

Choose a Table That’s Big Enough For Everyone

If there are five members of your family, don’t be tempted to buy a four-seat dining set and split up mealtimes into adults and children. You’re so much better off going with a bigger model that can comfortably seat everyone so you can all sit together.

Dress The Table Beautifully

Lovely matching crockery, glasses, and napkins displayed on the table doesn’t have to just be for special occasions. Make a big deal out of every meal! Give older children the responsibility of laying the table as you cook. Buy a stunning centerpiece to complete the look. But go for low/ short pieces such as fresh flowers in a fishbowl vase instead of a traditional tall vase. That way you’re not blocking anyone’s view or preventing people from being able to speak to each other.

Choose the Right Lighting

An overhead light above the table will finish off the look perfectly. You could go with something traditional like a chandelier, or something more industrial and modern looking such as a trio of pendant lights with exposed bulbs. This will help to bring everything together and make the table look like it’s supposed to be there. Even if you have it in a room like the kitchen or living room.

Have you got a good dining space in your home? Or is this an area you plan on working on?
