Coffee Ice-Cream

Coffee Ice-Cream

Ok I admit it...I have an addiction...My name is Daniela and I am addicted to gelato!
I said it!

The other weekend I was craving ice-cream but the only place that sell some near my house is 1 block down the road, plus it is SUPER over-priced (like 90 RMB - 14 usd- for 250 gr...!). So no, I was not in the mood for a rip-off nor to leave my couch and walk a block...

The idea of instead making my own gelato was WAY more appealing, so I went into my kitchen and got busy! A few hours later I was back on my couch with a cup of strong coffee gelato!

Here is the recipe folks!

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 cup whole fat milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1-1/2 cup coffee beans
  • pinch of salt
  • 1-1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 5 large egg yolks
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • 1/4 tsp finely ground coffee

Heat up milk, sugar, coffee beans, salt and 1/2 cup of heavy cream until steamy (NOT BOILING).

Turn off the heat and let it set on your kitchen counter for about 1 hour. Then reheat until hot and steamy again.

In a bowl beat up the egg yolks until light and fluffy.

Coffee Ice-Cream

Slowly pour in the hot milk and coffee beans stirring constantly to prevent the eggs from cooking.

Move the mixture into the sauce pan and cook stirring constantly until it thickens (about 10 min)

Put the remaining cream into a cold bowl over ice cubes. Add the vanilla bean paste and ground coffee.

Coffee Ice-Cream

Pour the hot custard through a strainer to catch the coffee beans.

Chill the mixture into the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight, then process it into your ice cream machine as per instructions.

Coffee Ice-Cream

Enjoy straight out of the ice cream machine if you like it more creamy, or place your gelato into the freezer for a few hours.

Coffee Ice-Cream

Delish!
