Hello Metalheads! I have been very busy along these months, I’m working hard on a new MetalWind project which I hope to publish it soon. I have not much time to write at this moment and I have a lot of pending bands to publish, but I will publish them as soon as possible, of course.
I bring you today a fantastic Spanish band called Ciconia which offer us an interesting instrumental progressive rock/metal sound that you shouldn’t miss.
These guys have been playing along the years on several musical projects, touring, composing and recording with different bands through a long way on their musical path. Finally in 2013, Jorge Fraguas (bassist and composer) has proposed himself a new musical challenge called Ciconia which is achieving great success with its first assault entitled “The Moon Sessions”.
Influenced by bands such as Opeth or Anathema, Ciconia band entered to the studio in November 2013 to the recording of their first album “The Moon Sessions”, which has been released in the early 2014.
The album is full of rich compositions with an excellent result in which we can enjoy a great progressive sound with fantastic heavy parts and some stoner touches. “The Moon Sessions” album contains seven instrumental tracks with a high musical level that I recommend you to listen.
Tentenublo”, the first track on the album, starts with a suggestive sound of bells, which is a personal nod to Ciconia’s hometown, “tentenublo” is an ancient prayer from some Spanish regions to zoom out from the hailstorm and to keep protected the harvest, the prayer was accompanied by the ringing of these bells and the orison says something like this: “Tente nublo, tente en ti, no te caigas…”
Another significative nod to the band’s hometown is the name of the band, “Ciconia” is the latin name of an animal commonly known in english as stork, and there are a lot storks around the region of these guys, which are a typical animal we often can see there.
Ok, lets go to talk about music! The significative bells open “Tentenublo” to make way for a powerful sound with surrounding guitar riffs and great changes of peace, the break around the minute three is really fantastic, I really think this is an amazing track which I recommend you to listen.
“Bibey” has a very fresh sound or “Honey On Thorns” with a nice pianno and the atmosferic background sound in the starting, has really a great melody on guitars and I think it’s another good track in the album.
“Chrysalis” spreads a surrounding and melodic sound which has its culmination from minute five to the end with a final discharge of powerful sound full of stoner touches really good.
One of my favorite songs in the album is “Jack O’Lantern”, I think it has an amazing sound full of good vibrations with a fantastic melody and folk touches which definitely I love. In my opinion this track prints a different fresh air as opposed to other songs in the album which display more deep and emotional passages through the musical and sensorial journey of “The Moon Sessions”. “Jack O’Lantern” is like a stop along the way to take a pint of beer in a little Irish pub, while the own Jack O’Lantern looks at you with his grotesque face, decided to enlighten you the way back through the night along the universe of Ciconia.
“Musical Oscillating Criterion” has very good acustic guitars on the first half of the track, which take you by the hand to the fantastic heavy sound of the second part through a good transition full of rich musical elements.
Finally, “Hampstead Heath”, is a track which brings us to the end of the journey across the particular universe of Ciconia finishing off a great instrumental album which you should not miss.
Really, “The Moon Sessions”, I think it’s a perfect title for this album. All tracks convey to you different emotions and sensations on each part of the album which arise in the night in the presence of the moon, when you are alone with yourself and your perception acquires a unique and personal dimension with a singular view of the things. I think that Jorge Fraguas knows perfectly what I am talking about…
Ok metalheads, I invite you to take a look to this great album “The Moon Sessions”, I think Ciconia is a promising band that you have to listen, these guys are starting their Spanish Tour 2015, stay tuned to “The Moon Sessions Tour” and, if you have the opportunity, don’t miss Ciconia’s live. They are going to play also around Europe in April. You can check all tour dates here.
