Brilliant Home Decor Tips for Novices

By Heather Hahn @HeatherHahnn

If you’re totally new to decorating, you’re in the right place! This guide on decorating your home will give you some tips you can use again and again, to make your home look exactly how you want it to look. Take a look and see what you can use:

Always Use Texture

Just about everybody who has a brilliant home decor uses texture. As much texture as they can. That’s a fact! This is because using texture to decorate helps to add interest and dimension to your home’s decor, which stops it from looking flat and boring. Use any kind of texture that you like in the form of furniture and accessories. You could use modern oak furniture with faux fur throws, for example.

Add a Pop of Colour

Decorating with a neutral color palette can be really easy and give a professional look. However, that look isn’t for everyone. Add a pop of color to show off your personality and bring the room to life! You can do this with a piece of bright furniture, some bright accessory, or even one wall.

Pull the Furniture Away from the Wall

Don’t have your furniture pushed up against the wall. It’s a lazy way to decorate! Instead, pull it a few centimeters away from the wall at least, as this will always create the illusion of more space. If you can, angle the furniture towards each other to get a social arrangement.

Display Art

Display art in your home decor. This way you can show off your favorite artists and your tastes. It’s a good way to show off your personality! Even if it wasn’t created by anybody well known, it can be a good idea to do this. You could put multiple pieces up on one wall, or even one large piece. It’s up to you!

Create a Feature Wall

Feature walls always bring the home to life. However, you can’t have too many of them if you want them to work. A maximum of two in the home should be the rule in general. You can create your feature wall using art, colour, murals, and even things you’ve picked up while traveling. All you need to do is make sure it fits in with the ‘theme’ of your room and get creative with it. It should be a wall everybody is drawn to when they enter the house!

Don’t Make Everything Match

Don’t feel the need to make everything match. Many home decor novices do this. It doesn’t look bad, but it’s another lazy way to decorate. Mixing up your furniture and styles can actually work really well. Having different seating styles for example, can look really interesting. Usually, all you need to do is tie them in by making sure they have a similarity about them, like the same color.

I hope you love these home decor tips and they help you to make a start on your decorating. If you have tips of your own, I’d love to hear them!
