Bread Sticks – Italian Grissini!

I have always wanted to try homemade bread sticks. I am a bread person, meaning I can eat a whole loaf of bread if I am hungry. When I am in a restaurant I can't help myself but snacking on the bread dipped in olive oil while waiting to be served!

Last weekend I finally got the time to make bread sticks at home. They are super simple and are a great idea to serve with cold cuts during a dinner or a party. In Shanghai they are quite hard to find and when you do find them, well they are VERY over-priced. So here you go with the recipe if you wish to make them at home.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 tsp instant years
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water + more
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil

In a small bowl combine yeast, sugar and lukewarm water. Let is sit on your kitchen counter for 10 min or until it gets all bubbling.
In a bowl of your electric mixer combine flour, salt, oil and the yeast mixture. Mix on slow until all the ingredients are combined and you get a smooth and soft dough. Add more water if needed. (about 10 min).
Move the dough into a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap and let it rest for 2 hours or until it doubles in size.

Divide the dough into small pieces and roll them out into a long think sticks (about 20 cm long and 7 mm thick). Bake them at 200 C for 10 min o until nice, crispy and golden-brown.
