Shadow of Whales

Shadow Of Whales is an alternative indie-pop band with a passion for creating music and spreading hope through friendships. Fronting the group is Joshua Flores, with his brother Caleb on drums, Chris Fraga on lead guitar, Jeremy Boyum on bass guitar, and JD Vazquez on keys/glockenspiel.

We caught up with the band to discuss one of their unreleased tracks, the unabashedly honest”Roots.” Read what they had to say about the single below.

Out of all the new songs we have scheduled for release this year, “Roots” is honestly my favorite and I feel like that’s probably because I relate to it the most. It’s a very emotional and very frustrating song. I’m going to talk about it in the first person but really this goes for anyone.

The song is about recognizing my faults as a human being. Turning the focus inward and looking at how I can sometimes be selfish or how I can sometimes knowingly let someone down. It’s on purpose but at the same time it’s not on purpose. It’s about having an emotional roadblock that I know is there but feel powerless to really do anything about. This applies to any relationship be it with a significant other, a friend, or a parent or guardian.

The chorus, “You give, I take. You leave, I say goodbye. You come back to save the day” really kind of sums up the selfishness inside me as a human and the struggle I have with not wanting to be that way. I recognize how wrong this is but I just keep falling into the same pattern.

The bridge, “round and round and round we go, oh for the last time!” encompasses the raw emotion of declaring that I will change. This part always gives me goose bumps, because making a declaration by screaming at the top of one’s lungs is very freeing and very emotional. There’s just something so powerful about words and speaking something into existence.

Ultimately, the song comes to a happy ending by taking solace that though I’m a human that has issues, (and might even recognize that I have issues) I am willing to fight as hard as possible to be the best human that I can be.
