Behind The Song: Mavrick – “Funeral”

MAVRICK PIC

Signed to Universal Music, Mavrick is currently working on his debut album which is bound to have an array of unique tracks. Following up from the success of his debut single “Remedy,” and receiving rave reviews by Noisey, Spotify, and Zane Lowe, the Scandi singer is back with a brand new number, “Funeral.”

For this single, Mavrick wanted the production to directly reflect the lyrics and all the conflicting emotions following them; and it does just that. Read what the singer had to say about pushing the boundaries, and about the writing process behind the song.

“Funeral” started out with that chord progression that more or less goes through out the whole song. I looped it and came up with the melody for the verse and the lyrics, then I took it to the boys in the studio and we played around with it until we came up with the beat.

I knew from the beginning that I wanted the melody and production to be in war with each other, to reflect the lyrics. I never went to music school so I don’t know anything about what you can or can’t do, or what you should do writing a song so I probably do stuff you’re not suppose to do but what the fuck, who cares.

To me breaking rules is what making music is all about, pushing boundaries and mixing different influences, not sticking to the protocol. “Funeral” is Britney Spears, Rage Against The Machine, gospel, fucking Mozart. I can’t tell if it’s any good, but at least it makes me feel something and that’s what I’m looking for when I listen to music.

Lyrically it’s very personal and I don’t want to get any more specific than I already am in the lyrics. But basically it’s about letting someone down, the very last person you’d ever want to let down and the shame that comes with that.

I think that the “At 4 am“-part just before the chorus is the core of the song, the part that sums it all up. Don’t do drugs kids!”
