The other Friday we decided on impromptu day out into Birmingham. Firstly we hit up Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to check out the Dippy on Tour Exhibition - Imogen was amazed and enthralled with the giant 'dinsaur' although less enraptured by the rather smaller and slightly more scary looking seagull. We hadn't planned to be in Birmingham long enough for lunch too, but after a tea stop in the Edwardian tea rooms we were drawn in by the rest of the gallery and ended up spending a good couple of hours exploring the Staffordshire hoard and the relics of the ancient world too. This worked up an appetite so we took a stroll down to Digbeth to check out the new Baked in Brick in their (hopefully) permanent home in the Custard Factory.
I loved their trademark red mini bursting out of the wall - some inspired interior decor there. The restaurant was already busy for lunchtime but we managed to grab a table and were heartened to see that they had a couple of highchairs. Lots of smaller places don't.
We looked through the mouthwatering menu, with wood fired pizzas, salads and a few specials and could have eaten the whole lot. There was no kids menu, but the team were more than happy to do us a small pizza, which was perfect for Imogen. We decided to share the Burrata Salad, Charcuterie and Cheese Plate as well as the Goats Cheese, Red Onion and Grape Chutney and Balsamic Pizza.
The burrata was creamy and delicious and a really light and tasty dish, the olive tapenade added a much needed salty kick to the sweet tomatoes. The meats and bread on the charcuterie place were good, but the cheese was straight from the fridge cold which was a touch disappointing.
Imogen loved chomping away on her pepperoni pizza, as did we on ours. The goats cheese and chutney combination was a winning one, and the pizza base perfectly cooked and charred.
Family friendly? A decent amount of space for prams, highchairs and accommodating staff. No designated kids menu, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it of a place like this.
I loved the sound of their lunch specials too, a daily changing sarnie, salad and another dish and only sides that I worked local to them so I could try out a few more on a regular basis. A great first visit to Baked in Brick, their street food has translated really well to a permeant base, so long may it continue.
