I finished Incarnate by Jodi Meadows about a week ago and it was AMAZING. I loved it. Make sure you get your hands on it when it's released! Jodi was nice enough to answer a few fun interview questions that are Incarnate related, and I definitely had a great time reading her responses, and I hope you do too! Here we go!!!
1. Incarnate revolves around the idea of reincarnation throughout lifetimes, what are your personal opinions about reincarnation?
When my sister and I were little, we played a lot of make-believe involving past lives as princesses that never existed. (We weren't so great at history and research, but we could totally make people up.)
Reincarnation has turned out to be a hotter topic than I anticipated. There are people who strongly believe and strongly don't, and still others who haven't decided or given it much thought. While it's not part of my beliefs, that doesn't take away from my fascination with the idea.
In INCARNATE, the reincarnation system is as fantasy as dragons and sylph. I've seen a few people here and there who've said they don't believe in reincarnation, so they're not sure they should read the book. But I do hope they'll give it a try, anyway. It's fantasy.
2. If you knew you were going to be reincarnated every time you died, what would you spend most of your lifetimes doing?
Would I remember everything, like in INCARNATE? If I did, I imagine I'd get lazy pretty quickly. Chocolate for every meal. Zero work. Eventually, I hope I'd break out of that and start DOING something with all the time I'd been given, but laziness would totally win at first.
3. Sam and Ana share a special bond over music. What role does music play in your life? Do you play any instruments?
We had a piano when I was growing up. I took a few lessons when I was very young, but it didn't stick. (I wish it had.) When I was eleven, I started playing the flute in my middle school band. I was a slower learner than I wanted to be (Ana's struggles with not being good enough come from a very real place), but eventually I began improving. I stayed in band throughout high school and what I could stand of college. (Speaking of things that didn't stick)
I don't play nearly as much as I used to, but I still have my flute and bring it out occasionally. Now, I'm more of a listener.
4. Would you rather have to fight off a dragon or a sylph?
Eeeee. That's a tough one. Um. Do I have a sylph egg to trap a sylph? If so, I choose that. I don't think I'd be a good enough aim to shoot a dragon. And if I'm weaponless . . . it doesn't really matter which I fight, huh? I die either way. :)
5. What authors have inspired you?
Every book is an inspiration, but some of my earliest inspirations are Robin McKinley (the Damar books!), Tamora Pierce (the Lioness and Immortals books!), and Mary Downing Hahn (Wait Till Helen Comes).
