Authentic Teochew Restaurant at Lee Kui (ah Hoi) Restaurant 2014

By Dariel

Both my father and mother are Teochew and they love Teochew cuisine very much. I could still remember when we were young; father will bring us for dinner at some of his favourite Teochew restaurant. Some of the Teochew restaurant that we had visited previously had even closed down due to either high rental or no successor to take over the family business. What a pity to see the closure of authentic Teochew restaurant.

Recently,Father had wanted to go and try out the food at Lee Kui (Ah Hoi) Teochew restaurant located at Mosque Street.  He had tried out the Teochew food there 20 years ago and will like to revisit the restaurant again. Not too sure if Lee Kui restaurant is still in operation, I had searched over the internet and gave them a call for reservation. My father was overjoyed when he knows that the restaurant is still around and serving authentic Teochew dishes like ‘fried pork liver roll’ and ‘pork jelly’. Let’s go there for lunch I said to my father!

Pork Jelly

猪脚凍$12.00

猪头粽 $10.00

Seriously I had not eaten 猪头粽 known as pig dumplings in my entire life before and not too sure what was this. One thing for sure that this dish is not easily available in other Teochew restaurants.

炸拼盘 $18.00

We had ordered a mixture of fried meat ball and fried pork liver roll. I had heard from father that nowadays not many Teochew restaurants have fried pork liver roll in their menu. The fried pork liver roll is one of the reasons for dining at Lee Kui. My father misses this dish very much. The dish goes well with the sweet sauce. Nom Nom!

Braised Duck

卤鸭片 $18.00

Tender braised slice duck with braised beancurd. Picture won’t lie and this dish was indeed delicious. I like to drizzle my rice with the braised duck gravy. Perfect match!

Assorted Soup $15.00

Hearty soup with lots of ingredients in it. The soup consists of : cabbage, lean pork meat, fish maw, slice fish, prawns, fish balls, meatballs and mushroom. This is the first time I had seen so many ingredients in a bowl of soup that we had ordered. Not forgetting the ingredients used for the soup are fresh too. Just like home cook comfy soup! Father had full of praises for this soup.

Oyster Eggs

鮮蠔煎蛋 $18.00

Look at the generous amount of oysters! We had ordered a small serving for the oyster egg and were quite surprised by the big serving served. The oysters are fresh and juicy and this dish is definitely a must try.

Very retro feel with spacious dining space. Now you know where to go for authentic Teochew cuisine.

With the closure of some of our favourite Teochew restaurants like Mong Hing Teochew Restaurant and Xu Jun Sheng   I do hope that the authentic Teochew restaurants will hang on in this competitive food industry so that we can continue to indulge in food that are slowly forgotten by the people these days.

Both my parents had left the restaurant with a contented smile on their faces. We will definitely revisit Lee Kui restaurant again!
