Apple is Working on a Fingerprint Scanner for iPad and iPhone

Posted on the 30 July 2013 by Anna Peterson

The fourth beta version of iOS 7 is released by Apple. And guess what? iPhone 5S is likely to use a biometric sensor to scan fingerprints. Using technology from AuthenTec (Apple bought this security company last year for $356 million), they may introduce new security systems and other features, as this company was known for mobile fingerprint technology.

In the code of iOS 7, subfolder called ‘BiometricKitUI’ is found. The code that accompanies this file and its purpose is a little mystery, as the text describes the image of a user holding his iPhone with his right hand (or left), the thumb placed on the home button. This would provide users secure access to their mobile device. Only the user with the correct fingerprint gets access to the content and features of the iPhone.

Although the iPad is not specifically mentioned in the code, we may assume that Apple will also use this feature for their tablets. Fingerprint scanner would be interesting for the iPad not only because of the better security, but also it would make using the iPad by several people a lot easier. Each user will get direct and quick access to his or her own account thanks to his or her own fingerprint.

When Apple will actually integrate fingerprint scanner in a new iPhone or iPad can only be guessed. It is expected that Apple announces new 9.7-inch iPad and new iPad mini in September or October, as well as the iPhone 5S.
