Allergies are unfortunately more and more widespread. An allergic reaction can be triggered by many substances - they are commonly known as allergens. Every additional exposure to the same allergen can result in a stronger reaction.

The most usual but quite annoying allergies most of us have to face occasionally has to do with large quantities of pollen being sent into the air by blooming nature every spring. Sneezing and tearing up are the usual effect of this but in more serious cases respiratory problems are also possible.

Of course there are also many other common allergies - food allergy being one of most common. In this case usually itching spots appear on some parts of our bodies (usually around joints and belly area) but various swellings are also quite usual.

With a use of some medications you can reduce the severity of an allergic reaction. These medications include: Nasal sprays, antihistamines, decongestants and leukotrienes antagonists, to name a few. The real question is what to do if we do not have access to any of those medications.

There is a substance we can use in such cases that is very commonly used in most households. It is baking soda (Sodium bicarbonate).

Baking soda proves most effective in easing allergic reaction to plants such as poison -ivy -oak or -sumac to relieve some of the associated itching. It usually takes about 20 minutes for it to have an effect. If you however notice a strong allergic reaction to whatever it might be you should seek medical attention regardless of counter measures you might have took. In cases of strong allergic reactions you obviously have to treat them with something stronger that can be provided at a nearest medical institution.
