Acai Berry For Weight Loss? Not Likely

By Jamie Koonce @charcuterielove

Acai Berry For Weight Loss…Um, No.

Why do they always use pictures like these? This woman is still fat. She's just standing with her legs crossed in the "after" pic to create an illusion.

Surely you’ve seen them — the ubiquitous ads that show up as Google adwords listings embedded in sites that are monetizing from the high traffic (usually news sites, online review blogs, and other websites made for people with a pulse but no brain).

“Learn how a stay-at-home mom dropped 10 pounds in 10 days!” “Five foods to NEVER eat!” “Ten foods that burn belly fat!” “Read how people everywhere are losing weight eating this African mango fruit!”  And, of course, “Acai berry for weight loss!”

Apparently people click on these things, and probably a few of those will even pull out their credit cards to buy these things without reading the fine print.  “Free 30 day supply of acai berries for weight loss!  We’ll bill you after the first 7 days if you don’t try to reach us to cancel your order.  And we don’t have a phone number.  For cancellations, you will have to submit a support ticket.  We’ll begin billing you $47 every month and sending you more cheap acai berry extract if we don’t hear from you within 30 days.”

Acai berry is a fruit that is popular in Brazil just like coconuts.  Frozen acai beries became popular among the surfers in Southern California a few years ago with the startup of a new company called Sambazon.  Acai tastes like chocolate flavored blueberries and they are commonly added to smoothies, yogurt, and granola.  It’s not a magical weight loss fruit from the jungle, though it is high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids low in sugar.  If anyone with two hemispheres in their brain is still spending money on acai berry extract pills, they need to save their money and buy some acai berries to eat instead.  An entire package usually costs about $6.

Enough on that.  I just had to rant!

Besides eating a nutrient-dense diet, getting plenty of sleep, and doing 10 minutes of high intensity interval training once a week , another way to shed excess body fat is to get rid of inflammation in your body.  Two of the best supplements for getting rid of inflammation are astaxanthin and cod liver oil.

Astaxanthin has the added benefit of protecting your body from the inside out from UV radiation, thus eliminating the need for toxic sunscreens to prevent sunburn.  Some people have found that astaxanthin makes their skin look more youthful and causes “sunspots” or “liver spots” to disappear.  Because astaxanthin has anti-inflammatory properties, it also prevents delayed onset muscle soreness after intense physical activity.

Numerous studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids accelerate fat loss even when calories are kept the same.  While having an imbalance in your omega 3:omega 6 ratio (an overabundance of omega-6 fatty acids in your diet in relation to omega-3 fatty acids) might be one factor that contributes to weight gain or difficulty losing weight, chronic inflammation is believed to be one of the main contributing factors to an expanding waistline.  Two to three servings of cod liver oil daily can help you lose weight by balancing your omega 3:omega 6 ratio and fighting inflammation.  Cod liver oil — unlike other fish oils — is also high in vitamin D, which can also help you lose weight by balancing your hormones.
