121: How to Exchange Business Cards in Mandarin Chinese

Exchanging business cards in an integral part of Chinese business life. There are also certain formalities involved in this too, so not only do you need to know how to present your card and introduce yourself and maybe your company, but you need to do it in the right way as well!

A: 您好!请问您是王伟的同事么?Nín hǎo! Qǐng wèn nín shì Wáng Wěi de tóng shì me?

B: 我是。我叫李红。Wǒ shì. Wǒ jiào Lǐ Hóng.

Yes, I am. My name is Li Hong.

A: 幸会!我是高磊。Xìng huì. Wǒ shì Gāo Lěi.

It’s a pleasure to meet you. I am Gao Lei.

B: 你好你好!很高兴认识你!Nǐ hǎo nǐ hǎo! Hěn gāo xìng rèn shí nǐ!

Hello, it’s a pleasure to meet you too.

A: 这是我的名片。Zhè shì wǒ de míng piàn.

This is my name card.

B:谢谢。这是我的。Xiè xie. Zhè shì wǒ de.

Thanks. This is mine.

A: 谢谢。Xiè xie.

Cultural/Grammar notes:

(1)In Chinese conversation, when we start a new conversation with a stranger and ask questions, we will say ‘请问’ where ‘请’ means ‘please’ and ‘问’ means ‘ask’. This is a polite expression which is similar to ‘excuse me’ or ‘may I ask’.

(2)As in some other countries, in China when you give and receive a business card, both hands are used to show respect to the other party.
