116: How to Talk About Advantages and Disadvantages in Mandarin Chinese

By Learnmandarinnow

Not everything you see or look at is alike. Some things are better than others or have some disadvantages. So how do you begin to explain the differences, or understand if someone else is telling you?

In this Podcast, you will learn:

(i) How to compare the advantages and disadvantages of certain things

(ii) To explain why something is better or worse than other things

Dialogue:

A: 老公,你能比较一下这两套房的优缺点么?我挑房挑的头都大了!Lǎogōng, nǐ néng bǐjiào yīxià zhè liǎng tàofáng de yōu quēdiǎn me? Wǒ tiāo fáng tiāo de tóu dū dàle!

Husband, can you please compare the advantages and advantages between these two apartments? I have trouble comparing them.

Méi wèntí, wǒ lái! Dì yī tàofáng de yōudiǎn shì wèizhì hǎo. Dàn quēdiǎn shì, jiàwèi tài gāo, miànjī tài xiǎo. Dì èr tàofáng de yōudiǎn jiù yǒu hěnduō la, miànjī dà, cǎiguāng hǎo, jiàwèi shìzhòng. Wéiyī bùzú de shì wèizhì yǒudiǎn piān, dàn qíshí zuò dìtiě yě hěn fāngbiàn. Suǒyǐ, zhè liǎng tàofáng bǐjiào qǐlái, jiù xuǎn dì èr tàofáng ba!

No problem. Let me do it. The first apartment’s advantage is its good location, but the disadvantages are that it’s too expensive and too small. The second apartment has lots of advantages: it’s big, the natural light is good, and the price is reasonable. However, the disadvantage is that the location is a bit remote, but taking the underground is quite convenient. So, comparing these two apartments, the second apartment is a keeper.
