10 SUPER FOODS FOR AMAZING HEALTHY SKIN

Our skin is our largest organ, and as such taking care of it is not always easy. Occasionally, it can start to look a little bit under the weather and cracks appear. Blemishes form, as does dryness, flakiness and any number of skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. If your skin is looking a little worse for wear at the moment, super foods can help.

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the latest diet trends, you’ll no doubt have heard the phrase “super food.” A super food is any type of food that is dense in nutrients, and which is noted for its health benefits. It’s essentially the exact opposite of junk food and serves to improve our overall well being.

The benefits that super foods provide include better cognitive functioning, more energy, weight loss, better heart health, a reduced chance of developing debilitating diseases – and healthier skin. Let’s take a look at 10 awesome super foods for healthy skin.

Blueberries

Blueberries are one of the best snacks you could ever have. They’re rich in antioxidants, which are basically your body’s first line of defence against nasty toxins that flood your bloodstream. And it’s these toxins that give rise to all kinds of conditions – including bad skin.

It’s really easy to get your daily fix of blueberries. You can sprinkle some on top of your morning bowl of oatmeal or snack on them in the afternoon instead of a candy bar.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is another one of great foods for healthy skin.

It’s little surprise that Goldilocks decided she would eat all the three bears’ porridge. Obviously, she knew that porridge keeps one’s skin looking golden and young!
Indeed, oatmeal is rich in calcium, magnesium, protein – and much much more. It improves your skin, and it also reduces tiredness and stress. It’s the perfect breakfast!

Salmon

Salmon is one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids that you’ll ever find, a vital nutrient that keeps your skin looking healthy and glowing.

Salmon is also rich in a mineral called selenium which protects your skin from too much sun exposure.

This fish comes with additional benefits, too; it can strengthen your bones and protect your heart.

You can eat salmon at any time of the day, whether it be at breakfast with some scrambled eggs or for lunch with some pasta.

Or, if you just fancy it as a light snack, how about trying salmon sushi?

Melon

Melon also deserves its place in this list of foods for healthy skin. It is one of the healthiest fruits you can eat, especially if you’re looking to get your skin back into tip-top shape.

Melon is often recommended by dieticians for anyone who wants to detox their body because it’s awesome at flushing out all the toxins that cause symptoms ranging from tiredness to bad skin.

Spinach

Spinach is one of the healthiest dark leafy greens you can have and it also has its firm place in our list of foods for healthy skin. As well as giving Popeye all his muscles, spinach also keeps your skin looking smooth and sparkling. It’s rich in all kinds of antioxidants and nutrients, and arms your body with vitamins B, C and E, as well as magnesium, iron, calcium and potassium.

You can eat spinach whole in a wide variety of meals, or you could blend it and add to a healthy green smoothie. However you consume it, we totally recommend that you try to pack it into your daily diet.

Oysters

When I was a child, the only time I ever heard of anyone eating oysters was in the Disney film Alice In Wonderland. And it transpired that one of the characters ate so many of them that he got a bit sick. And so it put me off eating oysters for a very long time!

But it turns out that oysters are actually very good for us. Not only do they act as aphrodisiacs, but they also aid with skin cell repair and renewal. This is because they’re rich in zinc, which also promotes hair, nails and eye health.

Bell Peppers

Bell peppers come in three different colours – red, yellow and green – but they’re all equally effective at energising your skin.

This is because bell peppers are rich in vitamin C that promotes more production of collagen in your body. What this hormone does is give your hair and skin a timely boost.

You can include peppers in your stir fry or slice them into sticks and scoop up some hummus.
Tomatoes

We’ve all pretty much given up on being immortal by now (I almost have), but most of us would be happy if we could just slow the aging process down a little by putting the brake on.

Tomatoes are a great way to stop your skin from sagging too early. Rich in antioxidants, these red fruits are absorbed really efficiently by your body, and they do a grand job at keeping you looking fresh and young.

You can get your tomato fix in any way, shape or form. You can eat them whole as part of a salad dish, or you can eat them in a pureed soup or even from a bottle of tomato ketchup!

Dark Chocolate

Are you surprised to see chocolate in our list of foods for healthy skin? So, it turns out that improving your skin doesn’t mean that you have to stick to a strict regime of fruit and vegetables. You can also enjoy sumptuous dark chocolate, too.

Why?

Because dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids that protect your skin from the sun. And we all know that as awesome as that big yellow ball in the sky is for a great tan, it’s also really bad for our skin.

You can eat dark chocolate on its own, or you could get your kicks from a cup of hot chocolate or a slice of chocolate cake. Either way, you’re having a gorgeous time.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are the quintessential super food for healthy skin. Nutrient dense, they contain iron, protein, potassium, magnesium, biotin, and much much more!

Pumpkin seeds improve your skin, boost your mood, and give you more energy. You can snack on a handful throughout the day, or slip them into your hot dishes, including stews, soups and stir fries.
