082: Giving Direction in Mandarin Chinese

If you are driving along and are not quite sure where to go, you’ll need directions. Either someone will be giving you directions, or you giving them. Don’t get too lost.. and try to ensure you know how to find your way…

In this Podcast, you will learn:

(1) To give directions to go somewhere

(2) How to follow instructions if someone else is directing

Dialogue: Two friends are driving along looking for somewhere:

女:哎,好好开车。红灯红灯!Āi, hǎohǎo kāichē.

Hey, look out for the red light!

女:我的天哪,你小心点儿行么?Wǒ de tiān nǎ, nǐ xiǎoxīn diǎn er xíng me?

Oh my god, can you drive more carefully?

男:这儿该怎么走啊?Zhè’er gāi zěnme zǒu a?

Where should I go now?

女:这儿该直行!然后第一个路口右转。……哎不对不对,可能该左转吧。。。Wǒ de tiān nǎ, nǐ xiǎoxīn diǎn er xíng me?

You should go straight. Then turn right at the first cross roads. Oh no…, no, maybe you should turn left… 男:咳呀,你到底去过没有啊?Zhè hāi ya, nǐ dàodǐ qùguò méiyǒu a?

Hey, have you ever been there or not?

女:我去过!但那不是很久以前了嘛,呵呵Wǒ qùguò! Dàn nà bùshì hěnjiǔ yǐqiánle ma, hēhē

I have, but that was long time ago…. haha

男:那现在到底该怎么走?Nà xiànzài dàodǐ gāi zěnme zǒu?

Then what do we do now?

女:呃……咱们还是用导航吧。zánmen háishì yòng dǎoháng ba.

Er…. let’s use GPS.

红灯:red traffic light

红灯红灯:in Chinese, native speakers are likely to repeat words for emphasis.

Eg. 小心小心:be careful be careful (emphasis).

你好你好:Hello hello (emphasis).
