081: Telling People Your Address in Mandarin Chinese

Maybe you’d like to invite one of your colleagues or some of your Chinese friends to your home for a function, event or party. Can you give them an invitation—and the correct address?

Dialogue:

A:小刘,周六晚上的party 你来不来啊?

Mr Liu, would you like to come to a party this Saturday night?

B:party?!什么party?

Party? What party?

A: 你没看到我发的邮件么?周六晚上我在家开趴。

Haven’t you read my email? I am having a party this Saturday.

B:咳,我这忙一上午了,还没来得及看邮件呢?你家住哪儿?

Sorry, I was busy this morning. I didn’t have time to check my email. Where do you live?

A: 我住育新小区2号楼1105。 I live at apartment 1105, Building 2, Yuxin (neighbourhood or district)

B: 好,我一定到! Sure, I will definitely come!

Chinese words and phrases mentioned in this Podcast:

小刘:literally translates as “little family name” and is a common expression amongst co-workers. You can use it when talk with your co-workers with whom you have a close relationship and who are younger and junior to you, or are of a similar generation. It can be used for males or females.

Eg. 小陈-little chen, 小张-little zhang.

2号楼:number 2 building 1105: the apartment number Cultural note: in China, the order for an address is from big to small—namely, country, province, city, district, road, building, apartment number, which is opposite to most western countries.
